As someone who has battled stress and its effects, I empathize with the struggle to maintain balance in today's hectic world. My name is Amy Listle, I'm a retired Hair Stylist and retired Event Manager (yes, I retired twice before age 37) and for the past 6 years, I've been dedicated to promoting mental wellness through natural and holistic means maximizing the gut-brain connection.

Life used to be really stressful for me but I didn't realize it, my body did. I'm the type of person that doesn't stop going. I mentally can take on a lot and operate pretty good on 4 hours of sleep. My body, disagreed.

The 1st year, I thought I was sick. I figured I was run down from all the travel, talking, working, being in large groups of people, I must have caught a cold. Then it kept happening every year and mostly around times where I would have to travel. It didn't make sense to me, I love to travel, why was it every time I would travel I would lose my voice before I even got to my destination?

Most of the time it was around a work trip, the couple times a year I needed my voice to be a presenter at a conference or network with my industry partners and I wouldn't have a voice. Finally, I had an answer. I developed Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD) WHY? Because I was STRESSED! What? No way, I was happy, I was doing things I loved, with people I love but it was all stress that even though in my mind I didn't think I was stressed that was my body's way of telling me to slow down and take care of myself. 


 I didn't listen. I had things to do.

I was a mom, wife, corporate exec, public figure, volunteer, high achiever, the list goes on... Burnout wasn’t an option for me. Or so I thought. 

My voice wasn't the only thing affected. I had pain, all over, back, shoulders, knees, headaches, anxiety, panic attacks, my body was sounding alarms, and I wasn't listening. I had those symptoms a long time before I lost my voice. When I look back, those other symptoms took years of building including gaining weight. My body didn't know what else to do, to tell me to take care of myself, so it took my voice. 


Turns out the more stress you have, the more gut damage you have. The more gut damage you have, the more hormone damage you have. Healing your gut, strengthens your immune system and serotonin production which eventually releases the inflammation, and pain. I experienced several other benefits along my health journey including reducing my PCOS symptoms, losing weight and inches!


I conquered the burnout, the brain fog lifted, I was mentally clear. I was taking care of myself and healing. Then I made a hard decision. As hard as it was, I was confident in myself and strong enough to know I could never let this happen to me again. 

Life is always busy and when it’s extra busy it’s easier to not take care of yourself but that is actually the time your gut, and brain need it the most.
